Jacque Leman studied under Francois Edouard Picot and made his debut at the 1852 Salon de Paris, also exhibiting in Vienna. His historical subjects take on ananecdotal character, as shown by Virgil at Leisure or Duel between Coligny and the Duke of Guise.

Frequently, his compositions take place in the middle of skillfully designed structures. Leman illustrated novels by Victor Hugo and dramatic works by Moliére, including the vast collection of The Works of Moliére, contained within this catalog.
